Rio is the anchor: Christ the Redeemer early, Sugarloaf at sunset, Santa Teresa in the morning and one full beach day. Trying to compress that into three days means giving up the beach, which is the wrong thing to give up.
Iguazu is the other Brazilian product, and it pairs naturally with the Argentine side — the falls are one place split by a border, and three days covers both.
May to October is drier, cooler and cheaper than the southern summer.
