How many days in El Calafate: two, three or five?
Short answer
How many days do you need in El Calafate?
For how many days in El Calafate, plan three full days: the Perito Moreno Glacier, a walk on the ice and the boat to Upsala and Spegazzini. Two days fits the Perito Moreno and one boat trip. Five days, with arrival and departure, is the standard package length, and a sixth day adds El Chaltén.

Key Takeaways
- Three full days in El Calafate covers the three things the town exists for: the Perito Moreno walkways, a glacier walk in crampons and the boat to the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers.
- The Perito Moreno Glacier is 80km from El Calafate by paved road, so even the shortest visit takes most of a day.
- Entry to Los Glaciares National Park costs $50,000 ARS for non-residents since 1 June 2026, paid at the park and not included in the tours.
- Add a fourth or fifth day only if you want El Chaltén, which sits 214km north of El Calafate.
How many days in El Calafate do you need for the essentials?
Three full days, plus the day you land and the day you fly out. That is why Lati Travel’s 5-day Best of Calafate tour package runs to five days: day 1 is the airport transfer, days 2 to 4 are three different ways of seeing the ice, and day 5 is the flight out.
El Calafate is a base, not a destination in itself. The town sits on the south shore of Lago Argentino, and almost everything people come for lies inside Los Glaciares National Park, which covers more than 726,000 hectares and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. The distances inside that park set the pace of any El Calafate itinerary, and every outing is a full or nearly full day.
Two days is the minimum that still makes sense. Use one for the Perito Moreno and one for a boat trip on the lake. You lose the glacier walk, which is the part most visitors remember longest, and you have no margin if wind cancels a sailing.
How much time does the Perito Moreno Glacier take?
A full day, whichever version you book. El Calafate’s tourism office puts the glacier 80km from town on paved road, with the first 40km across open steppe before the park gate. Two hours of driving round trip come off the top of the day before you see any ice.
Lati Travel sells four ways to spend that day, and they differ in how close you get:
| Tour | Duration | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Walkways & Nautical Safari | 9 hours | The panoramic walkways in front of the glacier, plus a boat along the ice wall. US$103 per person |
| Boat Blue Safari | 8 hours | A boat crossing, a forest walk on the far shore and time on the walkways. US$131 per person |
| Mini Trekking | 9.5 hours | A 20-minute boat across Brazo Rico, then about an hour on the glacier in crampons. Minimum age 8. US$274 per person |
| Big Ice | 12 hours | About two hours on the moraine and three on the ice, lunch on the glacier. Ages 18 to 50, medical form required. US$396 per person |
Both trekking tours end with about an hour on the walkways, so you do not need a separate walkways day if you book one of them. That is the main way to save a day: a mini trekking or Big Ice covers the view from the front and the walk on top in a single outing.
The park entry is separate. The general rate is $50,000 ARS per person for non-residents, and in the southern zone, where the Perito Moreno is, it can be paid by card, in cash or online. The ticket is valid for one day. Lati Travel’s tour sheets note a 50% discount on a second consecutive day if you show the previous day’s ticket, which matters when you book two park days in a row. The Perito Moreno page has more on the glacier itself.
Which day trips from El Calafate are worth a full day?
After the Perito Moreno, the day trips from El Calafate that earn their place are on the water. Both leave from Punta Bandera, on the lake’s north arm, and both take the whole day.
The Full Glaciers Day Tour sails the north arm of Lago Argentino past the Upsala, Seco, Heim Sur and Peineta glaciers to the Spegazzini. It stops at Spegazzini Base for a walk on 350m of boardwalk to the refuge and the Agostini viewpoint. According to the tour sheet, the boat departs at 09:00 and returns to port at 16:00, and hotel pick-ups start at 07:00, so the day runs 10 hours door to door. It is suitable for all ages and costs US$207 per person.
Estancia Cristina Navigation is the alternative for anyone who has seen enough of the ice from a deck. The boat goes up the lake past icebergs to Estancia Cristina, a ranch reached by water and no other way. It runs 8 hours and costs US$225 per person.
Pick one of the two for a three-day stay. Book both only if you have four full days and prefer boats to walking.
Should you add El Chaltén to the same trip?
Only if you have at least one extra day, and ideally two. El Chaltén sits 214km north of El Calafate, at the foot of Fitz Roy, so a same-day return spends most of the day on the road.
The short trails work as a day trip. The Laguna de los Tres hike to Fitz Roy does not, and needs a night in El Chaltén. The full time maths, trail by trail, is in our guide to the El Chaltén day trip from El Calafate, and the town has its own El Chaltén page.
If you want both places in one booking, the Calafate & Chaltén 6-day tour package adds the mountains to the glaciers for US$1,547 per person.
How many days in El Calafate, by trip length
| Days in El Calafate | Prioritise |
|---|---|
| 2 days | Perito Moreno (walkways or mini trekking) and one boat trip |
| 3 days | Perito Moreno walkways, a glacier walk, and the Full Glaciers boat to Upsala and Spegazzini |
| 4 days | The three above, plus Estancia Cristina or a spare day for wind |
| 5-6 days | Add El Chaltén, with a night there for Laguna de los Tres |
These counts are full days on the ground. Add the day you arrive and the day you leave, which is how the five-day packages are built.
A spare day matters more here than in Buenos Aires or Mendoza. The boat trips depend on conditions on the lake, and a cancelled sailing is hard to rebook when every other day is already a full-day tour. If you are still deciding which month to go, read when to go to Patagonia, and see the Patagonia tours page for how El Calafate fits with Ushuaia and Bariloche.
Which El Calafate trip to book
For a first visit, the 5-day Best of Calafate tour package is the three-day plan above with transfers on both ends: the Boat Blue Safari, the mini trekking and the Full Glaciers Day Tour, for US$1,426 per person. The Best of Calafate Glaciers 5-day tour package covers the same five days for US$1,397 per person.
For a shorter stay, book the single days on their own. The mini trekking gives you the walkways and the ice in one day, and the Full Glaciers boat covers the rest of the lake. The El Calafate page lists every tour that leaves from town.

Frequently asked
Is one day in El Calafate enough?
One full day is enough to see the Perito Moreno Glacier from the walkways, but nothing else. The glacier is 80km from town by paved road, so the visit takes most of a day with the drive, and the boat trips to Upsala and Spegazzini need a day of their own.
How far is the Perito Moreno Glacier from El Calafate?
80km of paved road, according to El Calafate's municipal tourism office. The first 40km cross the Patagonian steppe before the national park entrance.
How much is the Los Glaciares National Park entrance fee?
The general rate for non-residents is $50,000 ARS per person, in force since 1 June 2026, according to Argentina's national parks administration. It is paid at the park and is not included in Lati Travel's day tours.
Is there an age limit for walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier?
Yes. Lati Travel's mini trekking sets the minimum age at 8 years. The longer Big Ice hike is limited to ages 18 to 50 and asks every participant to complete a medical form before booking.
Can you visit El Chaltén as a day trip from El Calafate?
Yes, for short trails. El Chaltén is 214km from El Calafate, so a same-day return leaves around four hours in town. For the Laguna de los Tres hike to Fitz Roy, plan at least one night there.
