Salta is the base for northwest Argentina: colonial city, red rock canyons, the Salinas Grandes salt flat and the highest vineyards in the world at Cafayate. Four days covers the two classic circuits, both of them long driving days. Our packages here run five days and pair it with Jujuy.
The city keeps more colonial architecture than anywhere else in Argentina, and the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology holds the Llullaillaco children — three Inca mummies found at 6,700 m, and the most affecting hour in the country.
North, the Quebrada de Humahuaca runs up to 4,000 m past Purmamarca's seven-colour hill and out onto the Salinas Grandes salt flat. South, the Quebrada de las Conchas drops into Cafayate, where Torrontés is grown at 1,700 m.
Both are full driving days with stops, which is why four days is the floor and why the altitude on the northern circuit is worth respecting.
