Palermo Walking Tour: Street Art & Bohemian Spirit

Palermo is Buenos Aires’ largest and greenest neighbourhood, and this walk covers both sides of it: the parks around Plaza Italia and the narrower streets of Palermo Soho, where murals cover entire building fronts.

The route passes the Carlos Thays Botanical Garden and the grounds of the former city zoo, now Ecoparque, before turning into Armenia and Costa Rica streets and the passages off Jorge Luis Borges street, ending at Plaza Serrano — known locally as Plaza Julio Cortázar, ringed by bars and restaurants.

1. Step 1

   Plaza Italia

   • The walk starts at the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument, on Plaza Italia.
2. Step 2

   La Rural and Ecoparque

   • Past the La Rural exhibition grounds and Ecoparque, the site of the former Buenos Aires Zoo.
3. Step 3

   Carlos Thays Botanical Garden

   • One of the city’s oldest botanical gardens.
4. Step 4

   Armenia Street and Palermo Soho

   • Into the narrower streets of Palermo Soho, past Plaza Inmigrantes de Armenia.
5. Step 5

   Passages off Jorge Luis Borges street

   • Pasaje Russel and Pasaje Santa Rosa, two of the neighbourhood’s hidden passages.
6. Step 6

   Plaza Serrano

   • The walk ends at Plaza Julio Cortázar, better known as Plaza Serrano.
